The Ruling on Seeking Treatment from the Sufis

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some people are afflicted with madness and are taken to the sheikhs of the Sufis, who treat them with incense, erasing, and veiling. After that, they become in an improved state. What is the opinion of the Shari'ah regarding this?

A: One who is afflicted with madness should not be taken to the superstitious, but rather to the people of goodness from the good readers and those knowledgeable about treating such things, so that they may recite over him and blow upon him, and use in the recitation what is hoped from Allah, the Exalted, to be a cause for the jinn to come out of him. Allah has made a cause for every thing, and a cure for every disease. The general rule is that the believing, pious scholar known for uprightness and good creed, if he recites and blows upon him, and attends to him with recitation and warning the jinn and cautioning it, then it will come out by the permission of Allah.
In any case, it is not permissible for a Muslim to go to the superstitious Sufis who are known for their religious innovations, misguidance, and superstitions. He is not allowed to go to them or seek treatment from them, lest they harm him and drag him into innovations and superstitions. For the Sufis, in the general case, their path is one of religious innovations and superstitions. Many of them worship their sheikh instead of Allah, call upon him for aid, make vows to him, and seek his help whether he is alive or dead. Their conditions are serious, and the one who is saved from among them is few, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah.
We ask Allah for us and for them guidance, insight, and success in the sound path, which is the path of the followers of the Book and the Sunnah, namely the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who follow them with excellence. This is the straight path, and it is the religion of Allah with which He sent His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). It is also not permissible to treat a madman or any other patient with the sorcerers, magicians, and fortune-tellers who claim knowledge of the unseen, worship other than Allah, the Exalted, and treat patients with other than what Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, has permitted.
