The ruling on a father who does not order his children to pray
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: Many fathers do not advise their sons to perform the prayer. Does the father sin?
Answer:
Yes, the father who does not order his children to pray commits a sin; he commits a sin, and so does their brother, and so does their paternal uncle and their maternal uncle and their mother; they all commit a sin if they neglect enjoining good and forbidding evil, which is obligatory. It is obligatory for them to enjoin good and forbid evil, and this is among the obligations of the believers. Allah the Exalted says:[9:71] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 49a And they are capable of speech, meaning: they are capable of forbidding evil through speech. So the mother forbids evil, and the father, the eldest brother, the paternal uncle, the maternal uncle, and others. This falls under the category of cooperating in righteousness and piety. Allah says (Glorified and Exalted is He):[5:2] And He says (Glorified and Exalted is He): Indeed, man is in loss, except those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.[103:1-3] It is necessary to cooperate in righteousness and piety. There is no doubt that forbidding evil to the one who abandons prayer is from the category of cooperating in righteousness and piety, and from the category of calling to Allah. Yes.Yes.
The presenter : May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good, O Shaykh. If the father exerts effort in this matter, but the sons do not respond as expected, should he expel them from the house?
The Shaykh : He should expel them, or else refer their case to the authorities so that they may discipline them. If that is not possible, he should expel them from his house. He should expel them until his conscience is safe and his responsibility is absolved—may Allah grant us well-being—unless he is able to have them disciplined by the authorities. Yes.
The presenter : If he fears that they will fall into other calamities, O Shaykh?
The Shaykh : There is nothing greater than disbelief. Disbelief is the greatest of sins. May Allah grant us well-being.
The presenter : Allah is the One to be sought for help. May Allah grant us well-being. So, is there no sin after disbelief?
The Shaykh : Yes, it is the greatest of sins.
The presenter : May Allah grant us well-being and safety.
