The Ruling on a Woman Riding Alone with a Driver

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
And with the beginning of this episode, we return to the letter of our brother Abdullah al-Salih from Buraydah in the Qassim region. We presented some of our brother Abdullah’s questions in a previous episode, and in this episode, he has a few remaining questions. In one of them, he asks: Is it permissible for a woman to ride in a car with a non-mahram man without a mahram, to attend to a need in the market, or to go to school? Because some people are lax in this matter. Then, does her guardian sin in the situation described? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
There is no doubt that a woman riding in a car with a driver without a third person is not permissible. In my opinion, this is considered seclusion (khalwah), and one fears a consequence that is not to be praised. Therefore, it is obligatory for her not to go out with the driver unless accompanied by a third person, either a third woman, or a man in whom she has confidence, who is free from suspicion, to be with her when she goes to attend to some of her needs, or to school. This is what is obligatory. It is also obligatory for the guardian not to be lax in this matter, but rather to care for it, attend to it, and compel his ward to do so, as a precaution for the religion and out of fear of a bad outcome. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
