Ruling on the follower reciting al-Fatihah if the imam does not pause

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A message was received for the program from the listener 'Ayd Sa'id Bughaym al-Mizani al-Mutayri. Our brother asks in one of his questions, saying: If the imam recites Surat al-Fatihah aloud, finishes it, and begins reciting a surah after it, is it permissible for the follower to recite Surat al-Fatihah?

Answer:
Yes, it is obligatory for the follower to recite al-Fatihah. Some scholars have held that recitation is not obligatory for the follower, but the correct view is that it is obligatory for him. What is obligatory for him is al-Fatihah only. If the imam is reciting without pausing, he should recite it, then listen; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no Salat for the one who does not recite Fatihatil-Kitab.لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بفاتحة الكتاب
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 247Sahih (Darussalam)
It is agreed upon as authentic; and based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Perhaps you recite behind your imam?لعلكم تقرؤون خلف إمامكم؟
Sunan Abi Dawud 823Da'if (Al-Albani)
We said: Yes. He said:
Do not do so except when it is Fatihat al-Kitab, for he who does not recite it is not credited with having prayed.لا تفعلوا إلا بفاتحة الكتاب، فإنه لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بها
Sunan Abi Dawud 823Da'if (Al-Albani)
This is the correct view, except if he does not catch the imam in standing, but catches him in bowing, or at the time of bowing he is unable to recite. In this case, the correct view is that he is excused, and his rak'ah is sufficient. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
