The Ruling on the Sacrifice When Laying the Thresholds of a New House
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return at the beginning of this episode to the message from listener Ahmad, may Allah bless him, from the Dukka forces in Sudan. We presented one of his questions in a previous episode, and in this episode he has some questions. In one of them, he says: In our village, there are customs that I strongly doubt are correct according to the Shari'ah. For example, when a man builds a new house and lays the threshold, they must slaughter a sacrificial animal, which they consider obligatory. They say, "Tonight is the day of the threshold," and the threshold refers to the wooden beams placed for the windows and doors. Is there any religious consequence if I do not perform this act?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance.
As for what follows: This act is reprehensible and not permissible. Many people in many countries intend by it to slaughter for the jinn and to be safe from their evil. They say that this protects them from the harm of the jinn. It is not permissible to do that, even if the person claims he did not intend the jinn; because performing this matter in this manner at the foundation indicates a bad intention. Therefore, it is obligatory to be cautious of that and to leave it. However, one should seek help from Allah, ask Him for success, and abandon the pre-Islamic customs practiced by people of ignorance. This was an old custom of slaughtering at the foundation of houses for the jinn, to protect themselves from their harm, as they claimed. If the intention is for the jinn, then this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) and worship of other than Allah, may Allah protect us. But if he does it by following others and does not intend the jinn, then this is a religious innovation (bid'ah) and reprehensible, and it is not permissible. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
