The Invalidity of the Claim That Reciting the Qur'an Is Restricted to Those Well-Verseded in Religion

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We move on to another message from Sudan, sent by the listener Bahaa al-Din. We presented a question from him in a previous episode, and in this episode he asks and says: Some of our people say: It is not permissible to recite the Noble Qur'an for anyone who is not well-versed in religion, meaning: one who is familiar with the fiqh of the Sunnah. Is this statement correct or not? We ask for your guidance. May Allah reward you with good?
Answer: This statement is not correct. Rather, it is prescribed for the believer to recite the Qur'an even if he is not a jurist, and even if he is an ordinary person. He recites the Qur'an as it is in the mushaf, and he reflects upon it and understands it, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said in His Noble Book: in His Noble Book:
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.
[Surah Sad: 29], and He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitable
[Surah al-Isra: 9], and He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
And this [Qur'an] is a Book We have revealed [which is] blessed, so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
[Surah al-An'am: 155]. Reciting it and reflecting on its meanings is among the causes of following it, and among the means of following it. It is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It.
Sahih Muslim 804a
, so he did not say: "Let the scholar among you recite it," ... but for everyone. All Muslims recite it. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
One who is proficient in the Qur'an is associated with the noble, upright, recording angels; and he who falters in it, and finds it difficult for him, will have two rewards.
Sahih Muslim 798a
, narrated by Muslim in the Sahih. This indicates that a person may recite it and not be a scholar; he may stumble and lack the ability to read continuously and clearly due to his ignorance of the Arabic language, or his partial ignorance of writing. So the result is that he recites, learns, and benefits from the scholars, and he recites to one who is more knowledgeable than him, so that he benefits and so that his errors in the wording of the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) are corrected. It is not a condition that he be a scholar or a jurist, but he strives, recites, and learns so that he establishes the recitation of the Qur'an, even if he is not a scholar or a jurist. And this statement that these people made, this is a wrong and invalid statement. It is not a condition for recitation that the reciter be a jurist or a scholar. This is what no one among the scholars says; rather, it is invalid.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
