The Ruling on Tearing Clothes and Cutting Hair in Times of Calamity

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
From Al-Hayy District in Iraq, the listener Ikhlas Muhammad sent a number of questions, one of which says: Please rule on the woman who tears her clothes, cuts her hair, and strikes her cheeks until blood flows from them upon the death of a relative. Is this forbidden? And what can be done to expiate for this?
Answer: This action is an abomination and forbidden; it is not permissible, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He is not one of us (one among the Ummah of Islam) who beat the cheeks or tore the front opening of the shirt or uttered the slogans of (the days of) Jahiliya (ignorance).
Sahih Muslim 103a
, narrated by the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhari and Muslim, in the two Sahihs. This is among the abominations. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I have no concern with one with whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern, Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern with that woman who wails loudly, shaves her hair and tears (her garment in grief).
Sahih Muslim 104a
. The *salqiyyah* is the one who raises her voice at a calamity; the *halqiyyah* is the one who shaves her hair at a calamity, or plucks it, or cuts it; and the *shaqqiyyah* is the one who tears her clothes at a calamity. All of this is an abomination. It is obligatory for her to repent to Allah. It is obligatory for the woman who did this to repent to Allah, and repentance wipes out what came before it. She must have sincere repentance, with regret for what has passed and a sincere resolve not to return to it.
Allah the Exalted says:
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
[Ta-Ha: 82]. And He the Exalted says:
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
[Al-Nur: 31]. And He the Exalted says:
O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance.
[Al-Tahrim: 8]. So she should seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him, regret what has passed, and resolve not to return to it. And Allah the Exalted accepts the repentance of sincere repenters. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
