The Ruling on Reciting Some of the Narrated Supplications and Not Completing Them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A listener asks and says: Is it a condition for the supplication narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that it be performed exactly as the text, and is it not permissible to omit any part of it?

Answer:
As for supplication, it is recommended whether one recites it in its entirety, recites part of it, or leaves it out, provided it is not obligatory. However, the supplication that is prescribed, such as:
My Lord, forgive meرب اغفر لي
between the two prostrations, this is recited between the two prostrations. Likewise, the supplication seeking refuge from the punishment of the Hellfire and the punishment of the grave, one should recite it; because it is a confirmed Sunnah, and some scholars have considered it obligatory. Therefore, he should not leave it out in the prayer:
O Allah! I seek refuge with Thee from the torment of the Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trial of life and death and from the evil of the trial of Masih al-Dajjalاللهم إني أعوذ بك من عذاب جهنم، ومن عذاب القبر، ومن فتنة المحيا والممات، ومن فتنة المسيح الدجال
Sahih Muslim 588a
meaning: in the final tashahhud before the taslim.
As for the other supplications that are not obligatory, he has a choice. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate in his prayer:
O Lord, forgive me all my sins, small and great, first and last, open and secret.اللهم اغفر لي ذنبي كله، دقه وجله، وأوله وآخره، وعلانيته وسره
Sahih Muslim 483
, he used to recite this in prostration. If he recites it, there is no harm, and if he leaves it out, there is no harm. If he is content with saying:
My Lord, forgive meرب اغفر لي
, if he is content with saying:
My Lord, forgive meرب اغفر لي
, that suffices for him. And if he says:
O Allah. Forgive me all my sins, small and greatاللهم اغفر لي ذنبي كله دقه وجله
Sunan Abi Dawud 878Sahih (Al-Albani)
, that suffices, and if he completes it, it is better.
And so with the rest of the supplications, such as if he supplicates saying: ........ (peace and blessings be upon him) in his supplications:
O Allah, forgive me my faults, my ignorance, my immoderation in my concerns. And Thou art better aware (of my affairs) than myself. O Allah, grant me forgiveness (of the faults which I committed) seriously or otherwise (and which I committed inadvertently and de- liberately. All these (failings) are in me. O Allah, grant me forgiveness from the fault which I did in haste or deferred, which I committed in privacy or in public and Thou art better aware of (them) than myself. Thou art the First and the Last and over all things Thou art Omnipotent.
Sahih Muslim 2719a
This is from his preserved supplications - (peace and blessings be upon him) - so if he recites it in the prayer or outside the prayer, or recites part of it, there is no harm in that. And so from his great supplication: “O Allah, rectify for me my religion, which is the safeguard of my affair, and rectify for me my worldly life, in which is my sustenance, and rectify for me my Hereafter, in which is my return, and make life an increase for me in every good, and make death a rest for me from every evil.” This is a great supplication, narrated by Muslim in the Sahih. So if he recites it in his prostration, or recites it at the end of the tashahhud, or recites it outside the prayer, all of it is good.
And if he supplicates with part of it, there is no blame in that. If he says:
O Allah, set right for me my religionاللهم أصلح لي ديني كله
Sahih Muslim 2720
,
O Allah, set right for me my religion which is the safeguard of my affairsاللهم أصلح لي ديني الذي هو عصمة أمري
Sahih Muslim 2720
and stops there, it is valid. But the best is that he supplicates with this great supplication in its entirety, he recites it in its entirety; because it is a great supplication. Yes.

The presenter : So if words are omitted from it, it is not affected?

The Shaykh : Yes, as long as he recites a complete supplication, a supplication in which there is no omission, praise be to Allah.

The presenter : And there is no sin in omitting from the narrated supplication?

The Shaykh : Yes, yes.

The presenter : Praise be to Allah.
