Question:
May Allah preserve our father, the Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz, and grant him a good ending.
Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings.
I ask that you answer my question in writing. May Allah reward you with good.
Q: What is the ruling on reciting al-Fatihah for the imam, the followers, and the one praying alone? I ask for details. Does the imam carry the recitation for the follower if he forgets it or does not know it? Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good and forgive you.

Answer:
And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, after that:
The authentic hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicate that there is no prayer except with the recitation of al-Fatihah. The scholars have used this as evidence that it is a pillar of the prayer for the imam and the one praying alone.
As for the follower, the hadith of Abu Bakrah al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) indicates that it is not a pillar for the follower, but it is obligatory, and it is excused by forgetfulness, ignorance, or not catching the imam standing up. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that Abu Bakrah al-Thaqafi’s rak'ah was valid when he came and the imam was bowing, so he bowed with him, and he did not order him to make it up. This indicates that it is not a pillar for the follower, in order to reconcile the hadiths. And success is from Allah. Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
