The Ruling on Women Wearing Gold
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The letter before us, the first one we received, is from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Sa'd ibn 'Ali al-Harbi from al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, from the village of al-'Uwaynah. He says: We have heard from some of our brothers, the students of knowledge, that wearing gold is forbidden and not permissible for women. We ask for the extent of the correctness of this statement, if it is correct, with an explanation of the evidence for it?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: Some of the scholars have mentioned this, stating that wearing gold for women is forbidden, with details involved. However, the position of the majority of scholars, and some have cited it as a consensus, is that there is no blame on women regarding it, and that gold is lawful for women and forbidden for males. This is the correct position; this is the truth: gold is lawful for women and forbidden for men. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Bulugh al-Maram 2:460 and other hadiths that came in this chapter indicating its lawfulness for women and its prohibition for males. Likewise, wearing silk is lawful for women and not for men.
Except for what came in the hadith of 'Umar regarding the exception of the place of two, three, or four fingers of silk for men. It is authentic from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he prohibited the gold ring for men. He saw a man with a gold ring on his hand, so he removed it and said: So gold and silk are forbidden for males and lawful for females. This is the truth and the correct position, and it is like a consensus of the scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, except for the aforementioned exception of the place of two, three, or four fingers of silk for men, such as a button and the like. Yes.
