The Ruling on the Hadiths Warning Against Women Wearing Gold and Silver
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
At the beginning of this episode, we return to a letter from one of our female listeners, (N. R. W.), an Egyptian resident in Kuwait. Our sister asks in this episode and says: I read in the book *The Hijab of the Muslim Woman in the Book and Sunnah* the following: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5138Da'if (Darussalam) And my question is: I am an employee who wears gold when I go to work, meaning: I wear a ring, a wedding band, a small chain, or a small bracelet, and as soon as I return home, I take it off, meaning: I adorn myself with it outside the home, not for my husband. Is it forbidden, disliked, or will I be punished for it, as indicated in the referenced hadith? And if I want to draw near to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, should I do without this gold and sell it, since I will be punished for it, or what should I do? And peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
This hadith and its like, which warn against jewelry made of gold or of gold and silver, are all incorrect hadiths. They are all anomalous and contradict the authentic, established hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Some scholars said that they are abrogated. A group of scholars reported the consensus of the scholars on the permissibility of gold and silk for women and its prohibition for men. This was reported by a group of scholars, including al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, Imam al-Nawawi, al-Jassas the Hanafi, and others. They all reported the consensus of the scholars on the permissibility of gold and silk for women and its prohibition for men. They said: What came in contradiction to this is either abrogated or anomalous, contradicting the authentic hadiths. They argued for this with what is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Bulugh al-Maram 2:460 And the other hadith from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): along with other hadiths indicating the permissibility of wearing gold and silver for women.
So this hadith mentioned by the questioner is not authentic and cannot be relied upon. Even if it were authentic and free from abrogation, it would be interpreted as referring to displaying it to men, due to his saying: “she displays it,” meaning: she displays it to men for the sake of fitnah (temptation). This is not permissible. As for a woman who hides it from men and conceals it from men, there is no blame on her. However, if she displays any of her adornment, she is prohibited from doing so, due to the saying of the Exalted: [Surah al-Nur: 31].
So the conclusion is that the type of gold, silk, and silver are all lawful for women; there is no harm in adorning oneself with them and wearing silk. As for the man, he is not allowed to wear silk, nor is he allowed to wear gold, such as a gold ring or the like. As for a silver ring, there is no harm; it is lawful for men and women to wear a silver ring only., and it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) All of this is well-known and established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). As for women, there is no blame on them regarding jewelry of gold and silver altogether. Yes.
The Messenger of Allah [SAW] addressed us and said: 'O women, do you not have any silver to wear for adornment? For there is no woman among you who wears gold and shows it, but she will be punished because of it.'
خطبنا رسول الله ﷺ فقال: يا معشر النساء! أليس لكن في الفضة ما تحلين؟! أما إنه ليس منكن امرأة تحلى ذهباً تظهره إلا عذبت بهAnswer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man wearing a gold ring, so he took it off his hand and threw it away, and said: “One of you takes a brand of fire and puts it in his hand.”
وقد رأى النبي ﷺ رجلاً عليه خاتم من ذهب فنزعه من يده وطرحه وقال: يعمد أحدكم إلى جمرة من النار فيضعها في يدهThat he prohibited gold rings.
أنه نهى عن خواتم الذهب
