Advice on the husband's good treatment of his wife

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Do you have a word for husbands regarding how they treat their wives, O Shaykh?

Answer:
Yes, my advice to husbands is to fear Allah.
And live with them in kindnessوَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
[Surat al-Nisa: 19] with kind words, a good manner, forbearance, noble character, and by fulfilling their rights completely. This is obligatory upon all husbands. Allah says:
And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority].وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلِلرِّجَالِ عَلَيْهِنَّ دَرَجَةٌ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 228] Just as you love to be treated with kindness, and for her to be good to you in her character and conduct, so you must be the same. Allah says:
And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonableوَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 228] The fact that your right is greater, giving you a higher degree, does not mean that you should mistreat her or wrong her. No, it is obligatory upon you to have good character, to treat her with kindness, and to fulfill the obligation, in terms of the necessary financial maintenance with kindness, and in terms of kind words and good address. This is the obligation of all husbands: to fear Allah, and to be good to their wives with kind words, a good manner, and good conduct, and to avoid staying up late, and to avoid being stingy with financial maintenance. All of this is obligatory.
You must spend with kindness, and you must beware of staying up late, which harms your wife and harms you, and also causes corruption in your religion. Indeed, the evil of staying up late is great. You may miss the obligatory prayer, or you may be with people of evil who harm you and drag you into various types of corruption. So beware.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade staying up late after the 'Isha' prayer. So the Sunnah is that you come to your house after 'Isha' and sleep with your family. You rest in your house and leave off staying up late after 'Isha'.
And the man must beware of the company of the wicked. The evil of the company of the wicked is great. So it is obligatory to beware of the company of the wicked, and it is obligatory to care for the company of the righteous, and to avoid staying up late, and to care for the five daily prayers, and to maintain them in congregation, and to have good character with the wife, and kind words with the wife. This is how it is, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The best of you are the best of you to their wivesخياركم خياركم لنسائهم
And Allah says, and this is greater:
And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonableوَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 228] And He says, the Exalted:
And live with them in kindnessوَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
[Surat al-Nisa: 19] We ask Allah for guidance for everyone.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good, O Shaykh.
