The ruling on tayammum for the sick person and leaving off prayer because of illness
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
One of the listening sisters says: The questioner who called herself "the patient with the patience of Ayyub" from the West Bank, in the district of Hebron, says: Since I was twelve years old, I have been fasting and praying the obligatory prayers required of me. After twenty-five years, I fell ill. I am informing you now that I suffer greatly from water, and I perform tayammum. When the illness comes upon me, I stop praying. Please guide me regarding this matter. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
May Allah heal you and grant you well-being. We ask Allah for your healing and well-being from all evil, and that He rectify your heart and your religion, and that He protect us and you from all evil, as well as the rest of the Muslims. If water harms you, there is no harm in performing tayammum. Allah the Exalted says: [Surat al-Taghabun: 16]. The ruling for the one whom water harms is the same as the ruling for the one who does not find water. He performs tayammum, and praise be to Allah. He strikes the earth with his hands, wipes his face and his hands with it, and this suffices him in place of water.
As for prayer, you must pray according to your ability. If you can stand, you pray standing. If you can sit, you pray sitting instead of standing, if you are unable to stand. If you are unable to stand or sit, you must pray on your side, and it is better to pray on your right side if that is possible. If you are unable to do that, pray lying on your back, with your feet facing the qiblah.
It is not permissible to leave off prayer ever. Rather, you must pray in one of these forms according to your ability, as long as the mind is present.
If you can stand, you pray standing. If you are unable to stand, you pray sitting. If you are unable to sit, you pray on your side. If you are unable to do that, you pray lying on your back. This is how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) answered when some of the sick asked him. He said to him (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani) Al-Bukhari narrated this in the Sahih without mentioning lying on the back, and al-Nasa'i added with a good chain the mention of lying on the back.
The conclusion is: This is the obligatory duty of every sick person to pray according to his ability, as long as the mind is present. As for when the mind is gone, the obligation is lifted, like the case of the insane and those similar to them.
We ask Allah for your healing and well-being, and that He grant you the health that helps you to obey Allah as He has prescribed. Yes.
