Guidance on Facilitating Bridal Gifts and Avoiding Exaggeration in Them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner, Jamal Saleh, says in this question: Your Eminence! What is the ruling in Islam, in your view, regarding exaggeration in bridal gifts? And regarding not marrying off young men and burdening them with heavy obligations concerning the arrangements for marriage? And what is your advice to the guardians in this serious matter that must be addressed by you? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: My advice to all Muslims, men and women, is to avoid exaggeration in bridal gifts and to avoid making things difficult, in order to facilitate marriage for the chastity of all men and women. This is my advice to them. The hadiths and reports from the Salaf have come with indications of this. It is the Sunnah for the believer to avoid exaggeration.
The guardians of the people must fear Allah in this matter and strive to marry off their sons and daughters by means that are possible and easy, causing no harm to anyone. Times differ, but they should seek a suitable mahr that achieves the desired outcome without hardship for the husband; for many people are delayed in marriage due to exorbitant demands they cannot afford, and perhaps many women are left unmarried because of this, resulting in corruption that only Allah knows.
Therefore, it is prescribed for everyone to pay attention to this matter. The man should pay attention and strive to lighten and facilitate the marriage of his daughters, sisters, and others, and give them advice in this regard. The woman should likewise fear Allah and strive to lighten the burden with her daughter, her sister, and her relatives, so that everyone cooperates in lightening and facilitating things. In this way, marriage will be facilitated for all young men and women. It is not hidden that the existence of marriage with little expense is better than leaving a man or a woman unmarried. For her, it is better in this world and the Hereafter if she marries and the man preserves her chastity with a suitable bridal gift that does not involve difficulty. Likewise, for the man, it is better in this world and the Hereafter if he marries and a suitable woman is made easy for him without difficulty. So everyone should cooperate and advise one another in this matter, so that Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) may write success for it. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
