Encouraging the facilitation of bridal gifts and preventing fathers from seizing them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A message was received by the program from Aleppo, Syria, signed by two brothers from there: Husayn al-As'ad and Fathi al-Husayn. They ask about the bridal gift, saying: "The bridal gift among us is one hundred and fifty Syrian pounds, and most men do not have half of this amount. The father takes the bridal gift from his daughter by force. Is this forbidden or lawful?"
Answer: It is obligatory for fathers and all guardians to fear Allah and to strive to marry off their daughters with whatever Allah has made easy in terms of the bridal gift. They have no right to be strict in this matter; rather, they must accept a small amount if the daughter is pleased with it. Marrying her off, even with a small amount, is better than her remaining unmarried. It is not permissible for them to object to her if she consents, nor to consume her bridal gift without right while she is in need of it. The father is only permitted to take the surplus. As for the needs the daughter requires, those take precedence, and no other guardian may take anything from it without her permission, provided she is of sound mind.
The point of this is that it is obligatory for fathers and all guardians to look after the interests of their daughters and to care for their marriage, even with a small bridal gift, even with one dirham, or even with two dirhams. The aim is their chastity and safety, and striving to protect their honor, along with the great good that Allah has made easy in this, and facilitating the existence of offspring and the chastity of both men and women.
Therefore, it is obligatory for guardians to help in this matter and not to let greed for money destroy them by preventing their wards from marrying. All of this is a great danger.
This is my advice to all guardians in any place, whether in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in Aleppo, or anywhere on the earth of Allah. My advice to them all is to fear Allah, and to marry off their daughters, sisters, and wards with whatever Allah has made easy in terms of the bridal gift, even if it is small, and to strive for the good man who has religion.
My advice is also to the daughters and all women to be content with a small amount for the sake of chastity and choosing a righteous husband. Money is not important to them, for money is an easy matter. If Allah makes marriage easy, money will come.
Therefore, the believer should beware of what Allah has forbidden him and strive for what Allah has prescribed for him, as He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: :
And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bountyوَأَنكِحُوا الأَيَامَى مِنْكُمْ وَالصَّالِحِينَ مِنْ عِبَادِكُمْ وَإِمَائِكُمْ إِنْ يَكُونُوا فُقَرَاءَ يُغْنِهِمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ
[Surat al-Nur: 32]. Thus, the Exalted made clear that marriage is one of the causes of wealth.
In the hadith, it is reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "Three are entitled to Allah's help, among them: the one who marries in order to remain chaste," or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said.
The point is that women and men are in need of encouragement to marry, in need of assistance, in need of reducing bridal gifts, and in need of reducing and minimizing wedding feasts. All of this is among the causes of facilitating marriage for everyone.
So we ask Allah to guide all guardians and all women to what is in the well-being of everyone and what brings happiness to everyone. We ask Him to protect guardians from greed and to protect women from greed as well, and to follow the example of those who do not care about these matters. For following the example of the people of evil brings no good; rather, one should follow the example of the people of good, uprightness, chastity, and preferring the Hereafter. May Allah grant everyone success.
The presenter: O Allah, amen.
