Question:
The brother questioner from Jordan says in his second question: My grandfather passed away three years ago, may Allah have mercy on him. He died from an illness that lasted with him for approximately nine years. During these years, he did not fast anything of Ramadan because his condition did not allow him to fast. So what is required of him, and what is required of us toward him, O Shaykh?
Answer:
If he was unable to fast, then he owes nothing, because Allah says: [al-Baqarah:185]. So if he died and was unable to fast, there is no blame on him. But if he was lax, then fast on his behalf, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) Sahih Muslim 1147 meaning: his close relative. So if he was able to fast but was lax, the bequest is that you fast on his behalf. If fasting on his behalf is not feasible, then feed one poor person for every day. However, if he only left it off because of his illness, and otherwise he loved fasting and wanted to fast but was incapable, then he owes nothing, and it is not required of you to fast on his behalf. This is based on the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) : [al-Taghabun:16] and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 7288 And Allah the Exalted says: [al-Baqarah:185]. And this is what I understood... I did not understand... he died in his illness, so there is no blame on him.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
