Prohibition of Visiting Fortune-Tellers and Sorcerers and Asking Them Questions

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
As the brothers mention, Your Eminence, out of their fear for their creed when they resort to those who claim to manifest matters and may predict things, perhaps Your Eminence has guidance in treating such a matter, especially regarding people's fear of sorcery and jinn?
Answer: As for what concerns the question of consulting fortune-tellers, astrologers, diviners, palm readers, and their like among the practitioners of sorcery and those who claim knowledge of the unseen and claim that they perceive things through the jinn that others do not perceive, all of this is not permissible. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade going to them and asking them. He was asked about the fortune-tellers, may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him, and he said:
They are nothing.
And he said:
Do not go to themلا تأتوهم
And he said, may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him:
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.
Sahih Muslim 2230
Imam Muslim recorded this in his Sahih from the hadith of some of the wives of the Prophet, may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him, and in one wording:
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
.
This indicates that these people should not be visited, nor asked questions, nor believed; because their basis is guessing and predictions that have no foundation, or relying on what the jinn say, and the myths and lies of the jinn and their devils. So it is not befitting to rely on them. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said when it was said to him:
The fortune-tellers may tell the truth. He said: They tell the truth in one word and lie in a hundred.
And in the other wording:
In more than a hundred.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that this word in which they tell the truth is what they hear from the sky; the eavesdroppers hear it from the sky from the angels, and they lie with it a great deal of lies. In one of the narrations:
and the latter would add to it one-hundred lies of their ownفيكذبون معها مائة كذبة
Sahih al-Bukhari 3210
And in another wording:
They commit sins and add to it.
In some of them:
and then they add to it one-hundred liesفيكذبون أكثر من مائة كذبة
Sahih al-Bukhari 6213
It is said: "They have told the truth about such and such," so people believe them because of that word that was heard from the sky. And people, by their nature, are inclined toward sorcery and toward everything they think will benefit them, so they cling to everything. And the sick person also clings to everything. For this reason, they believe the fortune-tellers and astrologers in their many lies because they may have told the truth in one instance, or benefited in one or two instances, for example. And all of this is part of human nature: the inclination toward one who is thought to have something, especially if it is known that he benefited in it, even if only in one instance. So they attach themselves to him and believe him in everything. There is no power and no strength except with Allah. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
