What is the reality of the Night Journey and the Ascension, and how did it take place?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Finally: Your Eminence is asked to say: We hope you will give us an idea about the Night Journey and the Ascension of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after ten years had passed in Makkah calling people to the oneness of Allah and abandoning shirk (associating partners with Allah), was taken by night to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, then ascended with him to the heavens, passing through the seven layers and rising above the seventh heaven—(peace and blessings be upon him)—with Jibril (Gabriel) with him. So Allah revealed to him what He revealed and obligated upon him the five prayers: Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha', and Fajr. Allah obligated them as fifty, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept asking his Lord for relief until He made them five, (Glorified and Exalted is He), out of His grace , and a caller called out:
I have decreed My Obligation and have reduced the burden on My slavesإني قد أمضيت فريضتي، وخففت عن عبادي
Sahih al-Bukhari 3207
.
So he descended with them—(peace and blessings be upon him)—on the night of the Night Journey, and Allah revealed regarding this, saying, Glorified is He:
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessedسُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَسْرَى بِعَبْدِهِ لَيْلًا مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ الأَقْصَى الَّذِي بَارَكْنَا حَوْلَهُ
[Al-Isra: 1]. This great verse explains, Glorified is He, the Night Journey: he was taken from Makkah on al-Buraq, which is a creature greater than a donkey and less than a mule, its stride reaching the limit of its sight, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed. So he and Jibril rode it until they reached the Sacred Mosque, and he prayed there with the prophets.
Then he was raised to the heavens, and Jibril sought permission for him at every heaven, and permission was granted. He found Adam in the lowest heaven, Adam his father—(peace and blessings be upon him)—who welcomed him and said: "Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous son." Then when he came to the second heaven, he found in it 'Isa and Yahya, the sons of the maternal aunt, who welcomed him and said: "Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother." Then he was raised to the third heaven and found in it Yusuf—(peace be upon him)—who welcomed him and said: "Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother." Then he was raised to the fourth heaven and found in it Idris, who welcomed him and said: "Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother." Then he was raised to the fifth heaven and found in it Harun—(peace be upon him)—who welcomed him and said: "Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother." Then he was raised to the sixth and found in it Musa—(peace be upon him)—who welcomed him and said: "Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother." Then he was raised to the seventh heaven and found in it Ibrahim his father—(peace be upon him)—he is from the descendants of Ibrahim, Muhammad is from the descendants of Ibrahim—(peace be upon him)—so Ibrahim welcomed him and said: "Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous son," just as Adam said: "Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous son."
Then he was ascended to a high level, above the seventh heaven, where he heard the scratching of the pens with which divine decree and destiny are written. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) spoke to him and obligated upon him the five prayers as fifty, then he kept asking his Lord for relief until He (Glorified and Exalted is He) made them five, out of His grace and kindness. So they are five in obligation, and fifty in reward, and praise be to Allah, out of Allah's grace (Mighty and Majestic) , and may Allah guide them all, yes.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
