The ruling on one who promised to slaughter a sheep but slaughtered a kid goat

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
One of the listeners sent a message to the program and preferred not to mention her name. She has a case in which she says: I was away from studying for a long time, and I was very keen on studying, so I said: If I complete my studies, I will slaughter a sheep and distribute it as the 'Id sacrifice is distributed. As I know, the 'Id sacrifice is divided into three portions, and each portion is distributed in its place. After several years, the opportunity presented itself, and I completed my studies, praise be to Allah, and I slaughtered a kid goat, a young goat, and distributed it: a portion to the poor, a portion to relatives, and a portion to the household, which is my mother and my brothers, and I ate from it. But I was told that what I did is not permissible. First, the vow must be distributed in full. Second, I slaughtered a kid goat, but you vowed a sheep, and this is also not permissible. Knowing that I was not convinced, so guide us, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
What you said is not a vow. If the studies were completed, or if you succeeded, you would slaughter, this is not... this is a promise, not a vow. It is better to fulfill it, but it is not called a vow unless you say: "I vow to Allah," or "Charity for Allah," or "It is upon me for Allah," or something similar to this. This is a vow. But if you complete it, you do this, it is not a vow.
The second matter is that the kid goat is not sufficient, because you said: a sheep. You must slaughter something that is valid for the 'Id sacrifice, meaning: a one-year-old sheep, or a two-year-old goat, meaning something complete that is valid for the 'Id sacrifice. And if you intended by this statement that you would distribute it like the 'Id sacrifice, then you are on your intention, and there is no harm. And what you did is sufficient, but the kid goat should be replaced as long as the kid goat is small, as long as it is less than a two-year-old; it is not sufficient, meaning from the goats, less than a two-year-old is not sufficient. It must be a two-year-old goat, or a one-year-old sheep, so larger. This is what takes the place of this promise. So you, if Allah wills, will fulfill the promise, and it is not obligatory, but this is the best for you, because this is a promise, a type of intention, and gratitude to Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He). So fulfilling it is required. From the characteristics of the believer: if he promises, he fulfills. And from the characteristics of the hypocrite: if he promises, he breaks it. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
