The Ruling on Memorizing the Noble Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
One of the female listeners, who indicated her name with the letters (M S), says: I am often upset by those who say: "We do not memorize anything from the Qur'an." Is it obligatory for a Muslim to memorize the Qur'an, or should his heart remain empty of the Book of Allah?

Answer:
It is prescribed for the believing man and woman to take care of the Qur'an and strive to memorize whatever is easy for them. However, it is not obligatory for the one who has reached the age of accountability to memorize anything other than al-Fatihah, which is a pillar of the prayer. Al-Fatihah (Al-Hamd) is obligatory for every believing man and woman to memorize. If it is easy for him to memorize surahs from the Qur'an from al-Mufassal so that he can recite them with al-Fatihah, then this is a confirmed sunnah. Part of 'Am, or Part of 'Am and Part of Tabarak, or whatever is easy of that, is required as a sunnah. It is prescribed for him to take care of this matter.
But the obligatory thing is reciting al-Fatihah. If it is easy for him to memorize the entire Qur'an, that is a great blessing, and there is much good in the sunnah, but it is not required of people. Memorizing the Qur'an is a collective obligation (fard kifayah); it is necessary that there be among them those who memorize it, but it is not required of a specific person or another to memorize the Qur'an. Rather, it is prescribed for him to do so, or to memorize whatever is easy of it, such as Part of 'Am, or al-Mufassal, all of it from Qaf to the end. Al-Mufassal is from Qaf to the end of the Qur'an; this is called al-Mufassal. It is prescribed to memorize this al-Mufassal if that is easy, or to memorize whatever is easy of it, Part of 'Am, half of Part of 'Am, whatever is easy of the surahs so that he recites some surahs with al-Fatihah.
As for the obligatory thing, it is al-Fatihah, which is:
(2) [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds - (3) The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, (4) Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. (5) It is You we worship and You we ask for help. (6) Guide us to the straight path - (7) The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
[al-Fatihah:2-7] This is al-Fatihah. The believing man and woman recite it in every rak'ah in the voluntary and obligatory prayers. It is necessary in the obligatory and voluntary prayers in every rak'ah. If it is easy for him to add more with it, he recites the addition in the first and second rak'ahs of Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, and 'Isha, and he recites it with al-Fatihah in Fajr as well, and in the voluntary prayers, but that is not obligatory. The obligatory thing is al-Fatihah. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
