The Ruling on Lamenting over the Dead, Holding Feasts, and Firing Guns

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner (Eid J. M.) has a set of questions. He says: O Shaykh! When a person dies in our village, they build, or hold, a Fatihah for three days, and they slaughter some sheep for him, and the women cry with a very loud voice, and they carry the deceased to the cemetery, and they fire guns. What is the ruling on that?

Answer:
All of this is reprehensible; it is all reprehensible. Shouting is reprehensible, holding feasts is reprehensible, and firing guns is reprehensible. None of this has any basis. So it is obligatory to be patient, to seek reward from Allah, to praise Allah, and crying with tears in the eyes without making a sound is permissible. Crying is as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim ! Indeed we are grieved by your separation.العين تدمع، والقلب يحزن، ولا نقول إلا ما يرضي الرب، وإنا بفراقك يا إبراهيم لمحزونون
Sahih al-Bukhari 1303
when his son Ibrahim (peace be upon him) died, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah does not punish for the tears that the eye sheds or the grief the heart feels, but He punishes for thisإن الله لا يعذب بدمع العين، ولا بحزن القلب، ولكن يعذب بهذا
Sahih Muslim 924
and pointed to his tongue
or mercyأو يرحم
.
So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the wailing women and forbade wailing and tearing. He said:
I have no concern with one with whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern, Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern with that woman who wails loudly, shaves her hair and tears (her garment in grief).أنا بريء من الصالقة، والحالقة، والشاقة
Sahih Muslim 104a
meaning in the case of a calamity. The *salighah* is the one who raises her voice in the case of a calamity, the *haliqah* is the one who shaves her hair in the case of a calamity, and the *shaqqah* is the one who tears her garment in the case of a calamity.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He is not one of us (one among the Ummah of Islam) who beat the cheeks or tore the front opening of the shirt or uttered the slogans of (the days of) Jahiliya (ignorance).ليس منا من لطم الخدود، أو شق الجيوب، أو دعا بدعوى الجاهلية
Sahih Muslim 103a
meaning: in the case of calamities. And Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) ibn Abdullah al-Bajali said: "We considered gathering at the home of the deceased and preparing food after the burial to be part of the wailing." They do not prepare food for people, nor do they gather them, but if their relatives or neighbors send them food, there is nothing wrong with that; it is a recommended practice. When the news of Ja'far's death came, when he was killed in Sham, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his family:
Prepare food for the family of Ja’far, for there has come to them that which is keeping them busyاصنعوا لآل جعفر طعامًا، فقد أتاهم ما يشغلهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 1610Hasan (Darussalam)
So if their neighbors or relatives send them food, there is nothing wrong with that. As for them, the family of the deceased, preparing food for people and holding a feast for people, this is not permissible. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you and bless you, may the Shaykh be respected.
