The Ruling on Seeking Refuge After Yawning

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, who used the initials (A. A.) for her name, sent a set of questions. The questioner, Sister Sami'ah 'Abdullah, says in this question: One of the sisters told me that saying "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan" after yawning is a religious innovation; because it was not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and if a person says it, does he sin?

Answer:
There is no blame on him for that; because this is taken from His saying -Exalted and Majestic is He-:
And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allahوَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ
[Al-A'raf: 200] and the Messenger says (peace and blessings be upon him):
The yawning as from the devil. So when one of you yawns he should try to restrain it as far as it lies in his power.التثاؤب من الشيطان، فإذا تثاءب أحدكم فليكظم ما استطاع
Sahih Muslim 2994
And when people say: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan"; there is nothing wrong with it; because it is from Shaytan, but it is not said to be a recommended practice (sunnah). If one does it; there is nothing wrong with it; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that yawning is from Shaytan, and Allah says, the Exalted:
And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allahوَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ
[Al-A'raf: 200] So seeking refuge in Allah from Shaytan when yawning has no blame in it. It is not said to be a sunnah; because it was not reported, but there is no blame in it, just as one says: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan" constantly when standing up, or sitting down, or stumbling.. or the like of that, yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
