Explanation of the Book of Prayer-13

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :"And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
The yawning as from the devil. So when one of you yawns he should try to restrain it as far as it lies in his power. التثاؤب من الشيطان ، فإذا تثاءب أحدكم فليكظم ما استطاع
Sahih Muslim 2994
. It was narrated by Muslim and al-Tirmidhi, and he added:
in the prayer في الصلاة
."

"Yawning" is the subject, and "from Satan" is its predicate, meaning that Satan is the one who brings about yawning. And what is yawning?
The student: It is well known.

The Shaykh : It is well known, yes, yawning is well known, and there are things that cannot be defined or described. For example, if someone asked you, "What is a sneeze?" Yes, a sneeze is perhaps closer to being defined as "the expulsion of air from the nose in a specific manner", but what would you say about yawning? These innate, natural things are difficult to define or describe.
Now, his saying:
from Satan من الشّيطان
means that Satan is its cause.
So when one of you yawns he should try to restrain it as far as it lies in his power. فإذا تثاءب أحدكم فليكظم ما استطاع
Sahih Muslim 2994
And from this is His saying, the Exalted:
and those who restrain anger والكاظمين الغيظ
meaning those who restrain [themselves], "as much as he can" means to the extent of his ability. If he is unable, it was not mentioned in this hadith, but it came in another authentic hadith:
If he is unable, let him place his hand over his mouth إن عجز وضع يده على فيه
placing it in a natural position, not inverted, as some scholars chose. They say you place your hand inverted like this, and they reasoned this by saying that if he places it on his mouth on its back, it is as if he is repelling Satan with his hand. But we say the hadith does not indicate this.
He says: "And al-Tirmidhi added:
in prayer في الصّلاة
"
meaning that his saying
Yawning is from Satan التّثاؤب من الشّيطان
means that Satan is the one who induces the one praying to yawn, because it indicates laziness and relaxation. But taking the general meaning is preferable, because the cause of yawning is one, whether in prayer or otherwise, and it is the body's inclination toward laziness. And thus we know now, if a child is overcome by sleep, how do we know that he wants to sleep?
The student: From yawning.

The Shaykh : From the frequency of his yawning, and when a person becomes lazy, he yawns a lot.
