The Ruling on Yawning in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Abu Abdullah has this question: What is the ruling on yawning in prayer? Does it diminish it?

Answer:
Yawning is disliked, and it is from Shaytan, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us
that it is from Shaytanأنه من الشيطان
. So if a person yawns, let him suppress it as much as he can and place his hand over his mouth. It arises from laziness; its presence stems from laziness, weakness, or drowsiness. The Sunnah for the believer during prayer is to combat it by bringing his heart to presence and being humble before Allah, and by realizing that he is in a great station, so that he may be safe from yawning; because it is from Shaytan. The more he strengthens the presence of his heart before Allah and his humility before Allah, and remembers that yawning is from Shaytan, this realization is among the greatest causes for Shaytan to stay away from him and for him to be safe from yawning.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
