The Ruling on a Wife’s Anger at Her Husband

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
She says: I know that a husband is either Hellfire or Paradise for his wife, and for this reason I fear Allah regarding this husband, and praise be to Allah. He constantly calls upon Allah for me, but sometimes a disagreement may occur, or he may do something that angers me. I suppress my anger out of fear of Allah , and I ask Allah to decree for me all good. Is it permissible for a wife to be angry with her husband? To what extent? And will Allah reward the one who suppresses her anger toward her husband? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Yes, yes, you will be rewarded for restraining your anger, and you are doing a great good. Allah the Exalted says in His great Book, describing the people of Paradise, about whom He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), said:
And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteousوَسَارِعُوا إِلَى مَغْفِرَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا السَّمَوَاتُ وَالأَرْضُ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ ۝
[Al-Imran:133-134] So restraining anger is among the characteristics of the pious, who are promised Paradise and honor. So you are doing well if you are patient and restrain your anger for the sake of pleasing your husband, for the sake of good conduct in marriage, and for the sake of bringing the family together. You are doing a great good.
It is also obligatory for him to strive to conduct himself well in the marriage and to stay away from the causes of anger. You both must cooperate in righteousness and piety, and in leaving the causes that lead to anger and resentment. The believer strives to use good means with his wife, his family, and his Muslim brothers, and the believing woman does the same. Each of you must strive, and Allah the Exalted helps the servant if he fears Him and is patient. He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), helps His pious servants and makes their affairs easy for them, as He, the Exalted, said:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease.وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ يُسْرًا
[Al-Talaq:4],
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way outوَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا ۝
[Al-Talaq:2-3] So seek help from Allah and be patient, and pray for his success. He, too, must seek help from Allah, be patient, and stay away from the causes of your anger as much as possible.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
