Earning Reward for Reading Hadiths

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: He has a question: Evidence has come regarding earning reward from Allah the Exalted for reading the Noble Qur'an. Does one earn reward from Allah for reading the Prophetic hadiths?

A: Reading the Qur'an to draw near to Allah the Exalted carries a great reward, and so does reading the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and teaching them, for that is worship of Allah and a path to seeking knowledge and understanding the religion. The legal evidence indicates that learning and understanding the religion is obligatory so that the Muslim worships his Lord with insight. Among this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The best among you is he who learns and teaches the Qur'an.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1452Sahih (Al-Albani)
and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
He upon whom Allah intends to bestow goodness, He confers upon him an insight in religion
Sahih Muslim 1037a
and he (peace be upon him) said:
and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Himمن سلك طريقا يلتمس فيه علما سهل الله له به طريقا إلى الجنة، وما اجتمع قوم في بيت من بيوت الله يتلون كتاب الله ويتدارسونه بينهم إلا نزلت عليهم السكينة وغشيتهم الرحمة وحفتهم الملائكة وذكرهم الله فيمن عنده
Sahih Muslim 2699a
.
There are many hadiths regarding the recitation of the Qur'an, among them his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Read the Qur'an, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its people.
narrated by Muslim. And one day he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Which of you would like to go out every morning to Buthān or al-‘Aqīq (Two wādis not far from Medina where camels were sold) and bring two large-humped she-camels without being guilty of sin or severing ties of relationship?
Mishkat al-Masabih 2110
So they said, "We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we love that.'" He said:
Does not one of you go out in the morning to the mosque and teach or recite two verses from the Book of Allah
Sahih Muslim 803
It is better for him than two camels, and three is better for him than three, and four is better for him than four, and as many as their number of camels or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Muslim reported it in the Sahih. This indicates the virtue of reciting the Qur'an and learning it.
Among this is the famous hadith of Ibn Mas'ud, narrated in al-Jami' al-Tirmidhi with a good chain from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in which he said:
Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward.
Riyad as-Salihin 999
.
Similarly, if a believer learns the Sunnah by reading hadiths, studying them, memorizing them, and distinguishing the authentic from the rest, he has a great reward for that; because this is part of learning knowledge, about which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for himمن سلك طريقا يلتمس فيه علما سهل الله له به طريقا إلى الجنة
Sahih Muslim 2699a
as mentioned earlier. This indicates that reading verses, reflecting upon them, studying hadiths, memorizing them, and discussing them with the desire for knowledge and understanding the religion and acting upon it are among the causes of entering Paradise and being saved from the Fire. Similarly, the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
He upon whom Allah intends to bestow goodness, He confers upon him an insight in religion
Sahih Muslim 1037a
which is agreed upon as authentic, indicates the virtue of knowledge and seeking it, and that it is among the signs of goodness, as previously mentioned.
Understanding the religion is achieved through the Book and through the Sunnah. So, understanding the Sunnah is among the indications that Allah intends good for the servant, just as understanding the Qur'an indicates that. The evidence in this matter is abundant, and praise be to Allah. End of text.
