Is it permissible to trim the beard?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I have let my beard grow, and praise be to Allah. Now, whenever I meet any of my family or acquaintances, they disapprove of my beard and hurl hurtful words at me, asking me to trim it. I am determined to let it grow. Is it permissible to trim it? Or should I continue to let it grow and ignore their words?

A: It is obligatory for you to continue letting it grow and hang down, in obedience to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and in compliance with his command. You should ignore their words, disapprove of their speech, and remind them of Allah. This is not permissible for them; in fact, their action is truly acting on behalf of Satan, because by doing this, they have become his deputies, calling people to the sins of Allah. We ask Allah for safety. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Cut short the moustaches and let the beards grow, and differ from the polytheists.قصوا الشوارب وأعفوا اللحى خالفوا المشركين
and he said:
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.جزوا الشوارب وأرخوا اللحى خالفوا المجوس
Sahih Muslim 260
and he said:
Let the beards grow.وفروا اللحى
.
Therefore, it is obligatory to let it hang down, let it grow, preserve it, and not obey anyone who calls for it to be cut or shaved. We ask Allah for safety. This is the reality of the hadith:
That in the end of times, there will come devils who call to disobedience to Allah and to committing His prohibitions.أنه يأتي في آخر الزمان شياطين يدعون إلى عصيان الله وإلى ارتكاب محارمه
.
It was mentioned in the hadith of Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) , which is agreed upon as authentic, that when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the evil that would occur after him (peace and blessings be upon him), he mentioned that: after that, in the end of the Ummah, there will be callers at the gates of Hell, and whoever responds to them, they will throw them into it. I said: O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us? He said:
They will be from our own people and will speak our language.هم من جلدتنا ويتكلمون بألسنتنا
Sahih al-Bukhari 7084
.
We ask Allah for safety. These people and their like are of the same kind as those mentioned by the questioner. Therefore, it is obligatory to be cautious of them and not respond to what they call for that contradicts the pure Shari'ah. Allah is the One to be sought for help, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
