Is it permissible to shorten the beard?

The questioner : A final question, Shaykh, please do not mind. We heard a fatwa from you, Shaykh, at our brother Taysir’s place. A questioner asked you, and the topic was about the beard, and you said:The questioner : Is it permissible to shorten the beard? It is as if I heard you say, “I do not know.” So I am renewing the question: Is it permissible to shorten the beard, as we see some of the brother scholars shortening it to two fingers’ width or three fingers’ width?

The Shaykh : No, you are mistaken in what you mentioned. I do not say, “I do not know.” It is not permissible to shorten the beard except if it becomes long beyond the length of a fist.
