Ruling on going to sorcerers and fortune-tellers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
My brother has been missing from home for a while. We searched for him everywhere through the police and on our own, and in the hospitals, but we found no trace of him at all. So I and some others began looking into the matter, and they advised me to inform your Eminence about the issue; because they told me: perhaps the Shaykh will take an interest in the matter, and see a dream that leads you to his location. As for the other group, they told me: go to any sorcerer so that he can tell me where he is. But I rejected both options out of fear of their prohibition. We ask you to tell us the correct path, may Allah reward you?

Answer:
As for going to sorcerers and fortune-tellers, it is not permissible. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.من أتى عرافًا فسأله عن شيء؛ لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين يومًا
Sahih Muslim 2230
And he said:
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى كاهنًا، فصدقه بما يقول؛ فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد عليه الصلاة والسلام
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
He was asked about the fortune-tellers, so he said:
Do not go to themلا تأتوهم
, and he said:
They are nothing.ليسوا بشيء
They said to him: But sometimes they tell the truth? He said:
That word is heard by the jinn from the sky, and he inserts it into the ear of his close friend among the humans, and he lies with it a hundred liesتلك الكلمة يسمعها الجني من السماء فيقرها في أذن وليه من الإنس، فيكذب معها مائة كذبة
, and in another wording:
one-hundred liesأكثر من مائة كذبة
Sahih al-Bukhari 6213
So it is not permissible to ask them or to go to them.
But it is possible to ask people in public gatherings. It is possible to write in the newspapers and journals: Has anyone seen so-and-so, and his description is such-and-such, and his appearance is such-and-such? Some people may read the newspaper, and they may have information, or they may hear the radio in any location. The point is the radio and local newspapers or other newspapers in the country where you think he went, as well as public gatherings. What applies to a lost item applies to him: Has anyone seen so-and-so, and his description is such-and-such and such-and-such? As for dreams, a dream may occur to some people. A dream may be beneficial. A dream is a part of the forty-six parts of prophethood. Prophethood has departed, and the good tidings remain. It may occur to some people, and one may infer...
