The questioner: You also ask and say: We hear that it is forbidden for a woman to dye her hair with dye, so what is the truth of that?
The Shaykh: If the dye is pure black, it is not permissible for a woman or a man to dye with it. A woman should not dye her white hair with pure black dye, but she should dye it with henna, or with henna and katam mixed together so that the dye is between black and red, or with saffron, or something similar that makes it yellow or red or black mixed with red or yellow; there is no harm in that. As for pure black, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it.
Likewise, a man should not dye his gray hair with pure black, but he should change it with henna and katam, or with henna only, or with yellow only. This is what is prescribed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: And in another hadith: Sunan Abi Dawud 4212Sahih (Al-Albani) It was narrated by Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and al-Nasa'i with a sound chain, and the first one was narrated by Muslim in al-Sahih: Yes.
