The Ruling on Employing Non-Muslim Nannies
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Please inform us of the ruling regarding non-Muslim nannies, especially when it becomes apparent that they transfer their languages, temperaments, and styles of dress to the boy and girl. We ask for guidance in this matter, which has become widespread and causes pain to every believing man and woman.
Answer: Children are a trust; children are a trust with their father and mother. Therefore, it is obligatory that no one be entrusted with their upbringing except one who believes in Allah and the Last Day, from whom benefit and good guidance for them are expected. As for entrusting children to disbelieving women, this is reprehensible and not permissible. And if this is in the Arabian Peninsula, it is reprehensible from two angles:
From the angle that they are raising Muslim children, and this is a betrayal of the trust.
And from the angle that it is not permissible for a disbeliever to be brought into the Arabian Peninsula or to reside there.
Rather, it is obligatory that only a Muslim be permitted to reside there; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the expulsion of the polytheists and recommended this regarding this Peninsula. Therefore, it is not permissible for the people of the Peninsula to bring in disbelievers for upbringing or for work; because they are prohibited from this. If a nanny is brought in from the Christians or from other than the Christians, such as Buddhists or other disbelievers, this is not permissible for two reasons:
The first is that this is a betrayal of the trust, for upbringing is a trust, and children are a trust. Therefore, it is not permissible for anyone to raise children except a believing, pious woman from whom good is expected. Even if she is a Muslim, if she is a wicked, corrupt woman, she should not be entrusted with children. Even if she is a Muslim, if she is bad in her religion or weak in her religion.
The second matter is that it is not permissible to bring non-Muslims into this Peninsula. Therefore, no disbelieving workers, no disbelieving maids, and no disbelieving nannies should be brought in. This is the obligation upon the believers to beware of this; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) recommended the expulsion of the polytheists from this Peninsula, and because this Peninsula is the cradle of Islam and the source of Islam. Therefore, it is not permissible for two religions to coexist there; rather, it is obligatory that the prevailing religion there be the religion of truth, which is Islam only. And it is obligatory upon its rulers and its residents to beware of bringing disbelievers into this Peninsula, except in cases of extreme necessity that the one in authority sees for the benefit of the Muslims in specific individuals. Yes.
