The Ruling on Employing Disbelieving Servants

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Another question, as it came to us, and related to the topic of the seminar: What is Your Eminence’s opinion regarding a house that has a driver, a Christian servant, or a Buddhist, and this is a danger to the family? So, is there a word you would offer on every occasion in order to save this society?

Answer:
This has also been written about many times on the radio and in the press, and the Committee of Senior Scholars has written about it to the authorities, explaining that this must be prevented absolutely, and that no Christian, no Buddhist, or any other disbeliever should be imported, whether as a driver, a servant, or otherwise. Rather, one must beware of their evil and their presence in the lands. It is also necessary to eliminate disbelieving workers, so that none remain except those to whom dire necessity specifically and exceptionally compels, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept the workers in Khaybar due to dire necessity, and then 'Umar expelled them after he ordered their removal from the Peninsula (peace be upon him).
So the result is that directives and decisions have been issued to eliminate them, and we ask Allah to complete this in the near future, and to put an end to all of this.
It is obligatory for Muslims to be guardians of the religion themselves, and to stay away from the harms to Muslims in importing disbelievers, whether drivers, maids, servants, or nannies. Rather, all of this must be prevented. And if dire necessity calls for it, let it be from Muslims; good Muslim women or good Muslim men should be brought in if there is a need for this. One must also be careful, for not every Muslim who claims to be Muslim is sufficient. Rather, one must investigate this, for many people claim to be Muslim but are not, and this is worse than the Christian and the disbeliever, because of his wickedness, open sinfulness, and atheism, while he displays Islam like the hypocrites.
So one should investigate this when there is a need, from Pakistan, from Malaysia, from Indonesia, from Africa, from everywhere. One should seek out good Muslim men and good Muslim women when there is a need and dire necessity. And whatever is possible to import is better for him and safer.
As for Christians and disbelievers from among the other disbelievers, whether Buddhist, Communist, or otherwise, it is obligatory to leave that and beware of it, and never to import a disbeliever. Especially in this Peninsula, the Arabian Peninsula, it is forbidden to have disbelievers in it, and it is forbidden to import them into it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), at the end of his life and when he was about to part from this world, gave the will to expel the Jews, the Christians, and the polytheists from this Peninsula, and ordered that no one remain in it except a Muslim; because it is the land of Islam, the place of descent of revelation, the starting point of Muslims and the conquerors. So it is not permissible for anyone to remain in it except Muslims, and the disbelievers must be expelled from it. And Allah is the One to be asked for help.
