The kindness of a son in advising his father

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question is from a listener (R. A. F.), a Sudanese resident in the Kingdom, who says: I have a father who drinks intoxicants, may Allah protect us from that. I have spoken with him several times and explained to him that the religion forbids it, in addition to the material and moral harm it causes us. But my father did not stop drinking intoxicants until I got into a bitter argument with him, and he boycotted me and ordered me to leave his house. So I left the house. Please inform me: is there anything in my action toward my father that contradicts the Islamic religion?
Answer: Advising your father is a right, and he is among the most deserving people of your advice, and among the most deserving people of your kindness in his religion and his worldly affairs. But you must not use violence or harshness, even if he were a disbeliever, so how much less with a Muslim who commits some sins?
It is obligatory for you to be patient with the bad character you encounter from him, and to continue advising him, and to maintain ties with him through kindness in wealth and good conduct, if you are able and he is in need. And you should call upon Allah for him by night and day, in secret and in public, for guidance and success, so that he may leave what he is doing of consuming intoxicants. Do not withdraw your hand from his obedience or from maintaining contact with him. Rather, be kind to him and maintain contact with him even if he has boycotted you. Win his affection with good words and a pleasant manner, perhaps Allah will guide him through you. Have you not heard Him say (peace and blessings be upon him):
And if they strive to make youوَإِنْ جَاهَدَاكَ
[Luqman:15] Before that He says:
Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ
[Luqman:14] Then He said after that:
And if they strive to make youوَإِنْ جَاهَدَاكَ
[Luqman:15] meaning: the disbelieving parents,
But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Meوَإِنْ جَاهَدَاكَ عَلى أَنْ تُشْرِكَ بِي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلا تُطِعْهُمَا وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا وَاتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ مَنْ أَنَابَ إِلَيَّ
[Luqman:15] the verse.
So He commanded that they be treated with kindness in this world, even though they strive against their son in shirk (associating partners with Allah). And despite this, he is commanded to be kind to them, to thank them, and to be patient with that, and to follow the path of truth. This is what is obligatory for you with disbelieving parents, and with sinning parents, a fortiori.
So fear Allah, my brother, and return to being kind to your father. Advise him and bear what he may say to you of bad words. Call upon Allah for his guidance sincerely in your prostration and in your other states, perhaps Allah will guide him through your means. And be kind to him with wealth if he is poor and you are able. All of this is good for you and is what pleases Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). The father is not like other people; no, he has a different status. So fear Allah regarding your father, be kind to him, and return to advising him and continuing to counsel him, but with a pleasant manner, not with violence or harshness. Rather: "O my father! May Allah guide you. O my father, this is a serious matter. O my father! Allah has forbidden this. O my father! This has such and such harms." At the appropriate times, at the times when you see him most receptive to your advice. Then seek help from Allah for that, and ask Him to guide him and to help you with him, and to expand his chest for the truth. And thus seek help from those who have the ability to assist you, from your relatives and from your father's friends. They come to him and advise him with good methods, and help you in this great good.
This is what I advise you to do, and I ask Allah for you and your father guidance and success.
