Ruling on giving zakah to one who does not deserve it without intention

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Abd al-Rahman Muhammad al-Dakhil sent us this message, asking about acting as an agent in distributing zakah. He says: One of the Egyptian brothers who is a teacher gave me fifty riyals and said to me, "Take these fifty and give them to any person you see as deserving of them, for they are from my zakah." So I took the fifty riyals and gave them to a person, and it later turned out that he was not deserving of them.
Knowing that this incident happened a long time ago, and whenever I remember it, I feel distressed, and my conscience reproaches me, so I ask you to address this problem. May Allah guide you.

Answer:
If the person to whom you gave the fifty appeared to be poor and in need, and you gave it to him because of the need and poverty that appeared to you, then there is no blame on you, and it has taken its place and sufficed, and praise be to Allah.
As for if you gave it to him without looking into it or considering it, and it did not appear to you that he was in need, but rather you were lax in that matter, then you must compensate for it and give it to a person whose need and poverty you know. Yes.
