Guidance for those who neglect their children and do not encourage them to pray

Question:
Your Eminence, many people are lax in attending to their children; they reach the age of eleven or twelve and are still being neglected. Is there any guidance for fathers and mothers?

Answer:
Yes, this is not permissible. It is obligatory for fathers and mothers to guide their children and advise them. When a child reaches the age of seven, he must be ordered to pray. The woman and the girl are ordered to pray and taught, and the boy is likewise ordered and taught. His father or his brother takes him to the mosque. When he reaches the age of ten, he is to be beaten; for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is the obligation. When he reaches the age of ten or older, he is ordered to pray with the people, and he is beaten if he fails to do so. His father, his older brother, or his paternal uncle beats him. As for when he reaches puberty, it becomes obligatory upon him, becoming a fard. If he abandons it, he commits disbelief. We ask Allah for safety.
As for the seven-year-old, the eight-year-old, and the nine-year-old, he is ordered to pray but not beaten. Yes, we seek help from Allah.
