Question:
The first message in this episode is from listener Sa'id Abd al-Fattah Shahin, from Riyadh. Brother Sa'id has a long question, the summary of which is:
Inquiring about the ruling on praying in a mosque built by a man with money most of which is forbidden. Does the ruling on praying in usurped land apply to it? If not, why?
We ask that you please address this issue. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
Mosques built with forbidden money, or with money containing forbidden elements, are permissible to pray in, and they do not carry the ruling of usurped land. This is because money containing forbidden elements, or entirely forbidden money, is to be spent in lawful channels and is not left alone or burned. Rather, it is obligatory to spend it in lawful channels, such as charity for the poor, building mosques, building restrooms, supporting the mujahideen, building bridges, and other benefits for the Muslims. It does not carry the ruling of usurpation, because usurpation is taken by force and injustice, whereas these people acquired the money through unlawful means.
Therefore, it is obligatory for them to spend it in lawful channels, along with repentance to Allah . The money spent in these lawful channels is such that its owner is saved from its harm, along with repentance to Allah , and it becomes a benefit to the Muslims instead of being destroyed or burned. Yes.
