Question:
This is the first message in our session today from the listener Abdul-Wahhab Abdul-Wahhab Abdullah Abdul-Jalil al-Yamani, from Makkah al-Mukarramah. In his first question, he says:
A woman died in the village, and a non-mahram man washed her body, while her son was present, and her son’s wife was present, and many women were also present. Should he not have instructed one of the women to wash this deceased woman instead of this non-mahram man? What is the ruling on his action?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
This action is reprehensible, and it is not permissible for a man to wash a woman who is not his wife or his slave woman. It is obligatory for women to wash her; this is what is obligatory, and this is an error. He must repent to Allah , and her son must repent to Allah, as he was lax in this matter. It is obligatory for women to wash women, except for a wife, whom her husband may wash without harm, and a slave woman who is lawful for her master, whom he may also wash. As for anyone else, no; men do not wash women, even if he is a mahram to her, even if he is her father, even if he is her brother, even if he is her paternal uncle, he has no right to wash her; women wash her. Yes.
