What is the ruling on tobacco?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Her second question: Please inform us in detail about the ruling on smoking (tobacco), and what do you advise those who are afflicted with it?

Answer:
Tobacco is among the forbidden abominations, and the knowledgeable doctors have unanimously agreed on its great, varied, and numerous harm. Likewise, those who are knowledgeable about it and have tried it have unanimously agreed on its great harm. Therefore, it is obligatory to leave it. The doctors have advised against it, both the disbelievers and the non-disbelievers, until even the disbelievers have recognized its evil and harm.
Therefore, it is obligatory for every Muslim to beware of it, and for every one who advises himself to fear its evil, to leave it, and to use the means that help him to leave it. Among these means is not sitting with its users, for sitting with them leads to participating with them.
So the believer should beware of this foul smoke and keep away from sitting with its users, perhaps Allah will help him to leave it. This is something obligatory; because Allah has forbidden us the abominations and has forbidden us what harms us. He the Exalted said:
They ask you, [O Muhammad], what has been made lawful for them. Say, "Lawful for you are [all] good foodsيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا أُحِلَّ لَهُمْ قُلْ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ
[Al-Ma'idah: 4], the verse from Surat al-Ma'idah. So He the Exalted made clear: that He has not made lawful for us except the good things. And no Muslim who knows this smoke would say that it is among the good things; rather, it is among the abominations. And He the Exalted said in Surat al-A'raf, describing His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him):
and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.
[Al-A'raf: 157].
So the successful ones are those who followed him (peace and blessings be upon him), proceeded upon his methodology, and magnified his command and prohibition. Among that is leaving the abominations, the intoxicants, the narcotics, and the smoke; all of them are among the abominations, just as carrion and pork are among the abominations.
So likewise, what harms the servant and harms his mind and body, from the types of intoxicants, narcotics, types of smoking, and hashish which harms its users with great harm, the believer should beware of these matters, seek Allah's help in leaving them, and use whatever helps him to leave them. And he should beware of the company of their users or sitting with them, perhaps Allah will grant him safety. And Allah is the One to be asked for help.
