Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A letter reached the program from the Iraqi Republic, sent by our sister: A'lam Ibrahim Muhammad. We presented a set of her questions in a previous episode, and in this episode she asks and says: What is the ruling on my performing the Sunnah prayer while sitting?
Answer:
It is permissible for a Muslim man or woman to perform voluntary prayers while sitting, but with half the reward of the one who stands, as the Sunnah reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is permissible to pray the Tahajjud at night, or the regular voluntary prayers, or the Duha Sunnah while sitting, even if one is able to stand, but one will receive half the reward.
As for the obligatory prayers, one must pray them standing if able, unless one is unable due to illness, in which case there is no harm in praying while sitting. Otherwise, it is obligatory to pray standing, based on the saying of the Exalted and Majestic: [Surat al-Baqarah: 238], meaning: Pray standing. And based on his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying in the authentic hadith of 'Imran ibn Husayn: Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani) This is the order for the able person: he prays standing; if he is unable, he prays sitting; if he is unable, he prays on his side; if he is unable, he prays lying down. This applies to the obligatory prayer.
As for the voluntary prayer, one may pray sitting while able, but he will receive half the reward. Yes.
