The Reality of the Existence of Miracles for the Awliya

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it true that the awliya (close friends of Allah) are granted miracles that defy the norm, such as walking on water, and unveilings; such as seeing the Preserved Tablet and the appearance of the angels, and so on?

Answer:
Yes, the awliya have miracles, defying the norm, if they are upright in obedience to Allah and His Messenger. Miracles may occur for them when there is a need, when they have a need, or when establishing the proof against others, the proof of the religion against others. Allah may break the norm for them with a miracle. Among this is what happened to 'Abd ibn Bishr and Usayd ibn Hudayr. They visited the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a dark night. When they left his presence, their whips illuminated the path for them like a lamp, until they reached their homes. It was a miracle from Allah for them; each man's whip illuminated the path for him.
And from this is the story of al-Tufayl al-Dusi, the chief of Daws. When he embraced Islam and asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to make Allah grant him a sign so that his people would believe him, he asked Allah to grant him a sign. So there was light in his face from the lamp when he came to his people with it. He said: "O Lord, not in my face." So Allah placed it in his whip. When he raised it, it shone like a lamp. His people embraced Islam through his hands, and Allah guided them by his means.
And there are other incidents for the awliya of Allah during times of hardship, such as what happened to Luqman when the fornicatress accused him. She said: He committed zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) with her, and that she became pregnant from him, and she was lying. The people of his town came to him and demolished his monastery. He said: What is the matter with you? They said: You committed zina with this woman. Glory be to Allah, I did not commit zina with her. Bring the boy. They brought the boy to him. He placed his finger on the boy, who was still an infant, and said: Who is your father, O boy? He said: My father is so-and-so, the shepherd, who committed zina with the woman. When Allah made him speak while he was small, they said: We will rebuild your monastery for you out of gold. He said: No, return it to clay, return it to its original state. The point is: my innocence from what you accused me of. Praise be to Allah. And the stories are many in this regard. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
