What is the ruling on being named "Abd al-Muttalib"?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is your opinion regarding the name Abd al-Muttalib; what is its ruling? Is it permissible or not?

Answer:
It appears from the Sunnah that there is no harm in that; because it is established in "Sahih Muslim" what indicates the permissibility of naming someone Abd al-Muttalib, and among that is: Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith, one of the Companions, and he is one of the relatives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved him and did not change his name, which indicates its permissibility, and this is an exception.
For this reason, Ibn Hazm said: The scholars agreed on the prohibition of every name that implies servitude to other than Allah: such as Abd 'Umar and Abd al-Ka'bah and the like, except for Abd al-Muttalib, which is an exception; due to what came in the Sunnah, because he (peace and blessings be upon him) approved his cousin Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith and did not change his name.
This is only for Abd al-Muttalib, but making oneself a slave to Allah is the prescribed way, such as saying: Abdullah, Abd al-Rahman, Abd al-Karim, Abd al-Qadir, this is the best. As for Abd al-Muttalib, it is permissible, but leaving it is more preferable. If it is easy to make oneself a slave using the well-known names of Allah; this is the most complete and best.
