What should one do if he does not love his wife but has children with her?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I have a wife, and I have four children from her. I do not love her, and the only thing that has prevented me from divorcing her is the children, and my fear of committing a sin against her. I fulfill my marital duties toward her: providing clothing, food, and so on, but I have not been at ease with her. She has noticed this in me, and I have tried to love her, but I have not been able to for several years. As for her, she loves me and fulfills her duties as a wife. Please advise us on this, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
If you show her mercy and are patient with her, you will be rewarded. Allah says:
And live with them in kindnessوَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
[Surat al-Nisa: 19], and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The merciful are shown mercy by Ar-Rahman. Be merciful on the earth, and you will be shown mercy from Who is above the heavens.الراحمون يرحمهم الرحمن، ارحموا مَن في الأرض يرحمكم مَن في السماء
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1924Hasan (Darussalam)
. So if you are patient with her, strive to fulfill her rights, show her affection, be gentle, and give her the rights of companionship, you will be rewarded for that.
And if you cannot do so and divorce her, there is nothing wrong with it. If you see that you should divorce her, divorce her with a single pronouncement of divorce, provided she keeps the children, takes care of them, keeps them with her, provides for them, shows them mercy, and is compassionate toward them. There is nothing wrong with that; you are given the choice.
But if you can show her mercy as long as she loves you, be compassionate toward her, keep her within your household, and fulfill what you are able to, and if you are unable to do something, say to her: "O so-and-so, I am unable to do this thing. Forgive me, or else I will divorce you." If you want not to allocate her a share of your time, if you have another wife and want to visit her during the day or at night, but do not spend the night with her, say: "O so-and-so, if you forgive me, there is nothing wrong, and if you want a divorce, there is nothing wrong." Give her the choice. Otherwise, be patient, give her her full rights, and show her mercy, and you will be rewarded.
