How to Act When a Woman’s Menstrual Days Exceed the Usual Duration

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A sister of ours from Abha sent a message, signed (A.H.H), in which our sister also recounts a long story, as is the custom of some listeners. The summary is: her excuse extended from four days to eight days, which caused her to be confused in her performance of the Umrah. She asks the Shaykh’s Eminence: How should she act if this situation repeats itself for her?

Answer:
The custom increases and decreases, O sister in Allah. If the custom is four or five days and it increases to six, seven, eight, or nine, there is no harm. Do not pray and do not fast; sit down and leave off the prayer and fasting, because the custom increases and decreases. And if you are in Hajj or Umrah, do not perform the circumambulation until you become pure, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):
So do what all the pilgrims do except that you do not perform the Tawaf round the Ka`ba till you are clean.افعلي ما يفعل الحاج غير أن لا تطوفي بالبيت حتى تطهري
Sahih al-Bukhari 305
Thus, the menstruating woman and the woman with post-natal bleeding must refrain from circumambulation until they become pure. And so it is with prayer, because the custom increases and decreases.
The maximum duration of menstruation is fifteen days according to the majority of scholars. If the menstruation continues with you until fifteen days, this is menstruation. If it exceeds that, it becomes irregular non-menstrual bleeding. You return to your original custom, and you pray and fast in what exceeds it, and you are lawful to your husband, because it is known that it is irregular non-menstrual bleeding. You return to your original custom, which is four or five days or the like. When it comes, you leave off the prayer and fasting, and when it goes, you perform the full ritual bath. The continuous blood with you is blood of irregular non-menstrual bleeding, meaning: corrupt blood. It does not prevent prayer, nor does it prevent fasting, nor does it prevent the husband. However, you perform the ablution for every prayer, meaning: you clean yourself and perform the ablution for every prayer. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah bless you.
