The Ruling on a Woman Spending on Her Child and Counting It Toward Her Zakah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In her second question, she asks: Is my spending on my child a reward that exempts me from paying the zakah on my wealth?

Answer:
No, spending on a child is a necessary obligation. If the child is poor and has no father to provide for him—whether the father is dead or unable to do so—then it is obligatory for you to provide for him, according to the correct opinion, if you are able to do so. Zakah is not valid for a child, nor for the father, nor for the mother; rather, it is valid for poor brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and the like. As for your child, it is obligatory for you to spend on him from your own wealth. As for zakah, it is to be spent in other categories, specifically for its rightful recipients, the poor and the needy, excluding your children. Yes.
