Refuting the Doubt That Islam Harshly Treated Women

Question:
Our sister asks and says: Why are the rulings in Islam regarding women so strict, and yet most of the people of the Fire are women?
Answer:
The rulings are not strict regarding her; where is the strictness? Rather, she is granted leniency in many things. A woman is granted leniency in many things. If she menstruates, she does not pray and does not fast until she becomes pure. And when she becomes pure, only the fast remains for her to make up, while the prayer is dropped from her. The 'Aqiqah is not obligatory for her except one, whereas for a male it is two—in the 'Aqiqah—where is the strictness? ... There is leniency. And her blood money is fifty; this is from leniency, not strictness. Her blood money is half the blood money of a man, half of fifty camels. This is from leniency, not strictness.
And she is also commanded to obey her husband and to be upright in obeying her Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He) , to stay in the house, and to stay away from what Allah has forbidden for her. All of this is from Allah making things easy and facilitating them for her. He did not burden her with things that would harm or hurt her. He did not burden her with going out to work with men, or spending on her husband. The husband is the one who spends on her; this is from his service to her and from Allah's honor for her. So Allah made things easy for her and did not make them strict ; rather, He made things easy for her and honored her, making the husband the one who serves, works, toils, spends on her, and attends to her needs. And she attends to the house, the condition of the house, and the condition of the children, and prepares food and other things for the husband.
So in reality, she is both served and a servant. She serves her husband within the limits of her capacity and what Allah has prescribed for her, and the husband serves her with great toil. He goes out, toils, works, and takes risks to seek provision so that he can spend on her and her children.
As for the fact that women are the majority of the people of the Fire, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that. He said in his sermon: This is an expression for the majority. This is observed; we know this, and people know it, that when a woman sees from her husband something that disturbs her, she forgets his previous kindness and says: "You are the one who has these flaws, and I have not seen from you such-and-such, and I have not seen from you such-and-such," except for those among them whom Allah guides.
And cursing and lying are abundant among them, as is abusing husbands, children, and people. Therefore, he said: meaning: insulting, abusing, and bad speech. Cursing: it is applied to bad speech even if it does not contain: "May Allah curse so-and-so," as Allah said in the Qur'an: [Al-Isra: 60]. It is condemned in the Qur'an; Allah condemned it and criticized it. He said: [Ad-Dukhan: 45]. So He condemned it and called this cursing. So condemning a thing and abusing it with words that are not beautiful, such as: "May Allah disgrace him," such as: "There is no good in him," such as: "So-and-so is stingy," "So-and-so is a coward," all of this is called abusing, even if one did not say: "May Allah curse him." It is called: abusing.
So the point is that they are abundant in cursing, meaning: they are abundant in bad speech and harm with the husband and with the children, and perhaps she does that with relatives and neighbors. And the general rule is that this is from ignorance, little religion, and its weakness, but there are good and virtuous women among them...

O women! Give in charity and seek forgiveness frequently; for I have seen you to be the majority of the people of the Fire. So a woman said: Why, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Because you are abundant in cursing and you deny the kindness of the husband—meaning: the husband. If he were to do good to one of you for a lifetime, then she sees something from him, she says: I have never seen any good from you.
And cursing and lying are abundant among them, as is abusing husbands, children, and people. Therefore, he said:
You are abundant in cursing
تكثرن اللعنas was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur'an
وَالشَّجَرَةَ الْمَلْعُونَةَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ(43) Indeed, the tree of zaqqum (44) Is food for the sinful. (45) Like murky oil
إِنَّ شَجَرَةَ الزَّقُّومِ طَعَامُ الأَثِيمِ كَالْمُهْلِSo the point is that they are abundant in cursing, meaning: they are abundant in bad speech and harm with the husband and with the children, and perhaps she does that with relatives and neighbors.
