Her other question states: I read a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the effect that:
That you take precautions against urine, for most of the punishment of the grave is due to itأن تنزهوا من البول، فإن أكثر عذاب القبر منه
, what is the meaning of this?
Answer: This is a good hadith, narrated by al-Hakim in his Sahih and by a group of others. Its wording is:
Beware of (smearing yourselves with) urine, because it is the main cause of punishment in the graveاستنزهوا من البول؛ فإن عامة عذاب القبر منه
Bulugh al-Maram 103
, and in another wording:
Most of the torment of the grave is because of urine.أكثر عذاب القبر من البول
Sunan Ibn Majah 348Hasan (Darussalam)
. Its meaning is: taking precautions; it means taking precautions against urine and being wary of it. So if a person wants to urinate, he should urinate in a soft place, or in a hole in the place of relief, so that the spray of urine does not fly toward him. Both the woman and the man are required to pay attention to this matter, so that the urine is in a place where it does not splash onto a person. If something of it hits him, splashing on his thigh or on his foot, he should pour water on it and wash off what hit him, washing what was affected, until he has protected himself from the urine. If the place is soft, like soft earth, or if he places his private part on the hole itself where the water goes, so that it does not splash on him, that is sufficient. But in any case, taking precautions and being careful is good. So if it happens that the urine hits the edge of the place of relief and splashes on a thigh, a leg, or a foot, then the Muslim man and woman are required to wash that. Yes.
