Encouraging the Seeking of the Company of the Righteous

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
At the beginning of this episode, we continue a letter in which we previously presented some of the questions of the questioner Abdullah Rajaa Ma'ayyaa from Jordan. He says: There are some Muslims who refrain from eating with certain people, even if it is with their women or with their brothers. And when you say to him: Why? He says: Because these people eat with usurers or with those who drink intoxicants. What is the ruling on this action? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: There is no doubt that it is incumbent upon the believer to seek the company of the righteous and to sit with them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not accompany except a believer, and do not serve your food except to one with Taqwa.لا تصاحب إلا مؤمناً ولا يأكل طعامك إلا تقي
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2395Sahih (Darussalam)
A group of the scholars of knowledge said: Its meaning is: Do not take them as companions and close friends unless they are pious people of good. However, regarding a guest or something incidental, there is no harm if one eats with someone you do not approve of, if he came as a guest or if you encountered him at someone else's place; there is nothing wrong with that, even if he is one in whom you suspect usury or in whom you suspect that he sits with the people of intoxicants or the like. But you do not take them as companions if you know that they are companions of intoxicants or companions of corruption; avoid them and stay away from them.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The example of a good companion is like the carrier of musk; either he gives you some, or you buy some from him, or you find a pleasant scent from him. And the example of a bad companion is like the bellower of the forge; either he burns your clothes, or you find a foul smell from him.
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encourages us with this to seek the company of the righteous, and that they should be the ones who sit with us, the ones who are our companions, in residence and in travel. And he warns us against the company of the wicked. But what occurs incidentally, without being a companion, because he is a guest, or because you encountered him at an invitation and feast, there is no harm in that. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah bless you, and may Allah reward you with good.
