The Role of the Mother Toward Her Sick Child
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Here is a lengthy message, two pages of large format, sent by one of our sisters from Iraq. It says: The afflicted mother, Umm Jawad, our sister, complains about her son’s health condition, as he is afflicted with many illnesses whenever an exam approaches. She seeks guidance, especially since she fears going to sorcerers and fortune-tellers?
Answer: We advise you to make du'a for his well-being. Pray for him frequently in your prayer, in your prostration, and in your tashahhud before the taslim. Pray for his well-being and healing. Take him to specialists in this type of illness, such as psychologists and others. Also, advise those who are among the righteous and skilled in recitation to recite over him, so that perhaps Allah will heal him through that. It may be a jinn, which is what they call the evil eye, or it may be... and Allah may benefit him through the recitation in this matter. If it is possible to find righteous people who will recite over him, then this will, if Allah wills, be a cause of healing. Likewise, take him to some good doctors, such as psychologists or specialists in this illness that afflicts people. If it is possible to find someone to treat him, praise be to Allah; otherwise, the recitation is sufficient, along with du'a. As for going to sorcerers, it is not permissible. The fortune-tellers who serve the jinn, ask the jinn, and claim knowledge of the unseen— it is not permissible to visit them or ask them. Rather, it is obligatory to disavow them and beware of them, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 2230 narrated by Muslim in the Sahih.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:741, so it is obligatory for every believer, male and female, to beware of what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden and to be content with what Allah has prescribed. We ask Allah for his healing and well-being. We ask Allah to grant him healing and to deliver him from what has befallen him, and to make easy for him a sound and effective treatment. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. So, Your Eminence, do you see any prohibition in taking him to some trustworthy people so that they may recite over him or the like?
The Shaykh: Yes.
The presenter: And this is not also considered going to what you called sorcerers?
The Shaykh: No, you seek out good people known for their sound creed and recitation over the sick, so that perhaps Allah may benefit him through that; because recitation over the sick is beneficial. Allah has placed healing in the Qur'an, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 3886Sahih (Al-Albani), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ruqyah and was himself subjected to ruqyah.

Submit your invocations to me. There is no harm in invocations so long as there is no polytheism in them.
