Explaining the Ruling on the Amount of Expenditure for Hajj
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question in the letter of the sister, Khamriyyah Salman bint [Name] from Iraq, states: I intend to go to the House of Allah the Sacred to perform the obligatory Hajj, and I possess a sum of money amounting to one thousand dinars. What is the amount allocated for performing the obligatory Hajj? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: There is no fixed cost for Hajj, but rather it is according to one's ability. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: : [Al-Imran: 97]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when asked about Islam: Sahih Muslim 8a. So if a man or a woman is able to afford the cost, then Hajj is obligatory upon them. The cost varies in every time and place; the journey from Iraq to Makkah has its own situation, the journey from America to Makkah has its own situation, and the journey from Morocco to Makkah has its own situation. In any case, Hajj is obligatory upon the believer if he is able, if he has enough provision for his going and his return, and for the maintenance of those who remain behind in the house from his family, if he is able to do that, he performs Hajj. If he is not able, then he owes nothing. There is no limited limit for this, but rather what is required is the ability to afford the cost of the car, the fare of the car or the plane, the cost of the road, the cost in Makkah, the cost of returning, and other things incidental to Hajj. If a man or a woman is able to afford this expenditure, then Hajj is obligatory upon them. If they are not able, then there is no Hajj upon them, and praise be to Allah.
