The Bliss and Torment of the Barzakh for Both the Soul and the Body

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Regarding the digging up of graves, which you see... as the Shaykh mentioned, in some they found nothing, and in others they found only the spine bone?

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, every part of the son of Adam perishes except the spine bone, which remains, and from it creation is resurrected on the Day of Resurrection.إن ابن آدم يفنى منه كل شيء إلا عجب الذنب يبقى، ومنه يركب الخلق يوم القيامة
And the wonder of the sin is that it is very small, yet the creation will ride upon it on the Day of Resurrection. So the punishment is not specific to the body; most of it is upon the soul, and the soul has a great status. If it is in mindfulness of Allah, then it has the bliss of Paradise; and if it is otherwise, then it has its punishment from the Fire. We ask Allah for well-being, as He said (Glorified and Exalted is He) regarding the family of Fir'awn:
The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening.النَّارُ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَيْهَا غُدُوًّا وَعَشِيًّا
[Ghafir:46] meaning their souls and their bodies—we ask Allah for well-being—
And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ أَدْخِلُوا آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ أَشَدَّ الْعَذَابِ
[Ghafir:46].
So the souls have their share of torment—and this is the majority in the barzakh—and the body has its share as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) wills... in their conditions until... it may receive its share, even if people do not feel it. And Allah has shown some of His servants this torment in this world before the Hereafter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that. Allah showed him two graves being tormented because of talebearing and not cleaning oneself from urine in this world before the Hereafter.
It is established for us from many paths, and Ibn Rajab mentioned it in *The Terrors of the Graves*. It is established for us from many paths, from the perspective of the present and the absent. What the scholars mentioned are great and numerous stories about graves where their inhabitants witnessed the torment. Some of this happens when they leave; some of them may forget a tool, such as a shovel or something else, so they open the grave and find it burning with fire over its inhabitants—we ask Allah for safety—when it was buried at that hour, they see with their eyes this grave burning with fire.
Likewise, there are other incidents where they find the same tool they left, such as a shovel or a lever, burning with fire over the owner of the grave. They ask the family of the deceased what is the matter with him? They say such and such. This one was negligent in prayer, this one’s affair was such and such, this one’s affair was such and such, so the punishment was hastened for him from the moment he fell into the grave.
And the Shaykh Abdullah mentioned to you an example of what happens in this world, by which the issues of the graves can be measured. The issue of sleep: this person sleeps and this one is next to him. So this one sees a dream in which there is bliss for him and rest for him, and this one sees a dream in which there is torment for him. When he wakes up, he is happy with safety. He wakes up tired, his saliva dried up, and the distress, sweat, and matter have intensified for him. He thinks that this dream is true because of what he saw in his sleep of torment, harm, threats, and beating for him, and other things.
And the other one sees that he is in rest, with his companions, in comfort and rest. This one wakes up tired and this one wakes up rested. And each of them is next to his companion... the husband with his wife, the son with his brother, the person with the person in travel, and the like. They are all close together in the tent, or in the desert, with only a little space between them. This one is in torment and this one is in bliss, like the good dreams and the bad dreams. So the thing that Allah decrees for the servants is not of the kind that people know and feel between themselves in wakefulness, and Allah is the One to be asked for help.
